Jousting Knights Tapestry

This exquisite Jousting Knights Tapestry from Flemish origin depicts a Tournament of Chivalry between a Breton and a Bourbon knight, a miniature by Barthélemy d'Eyck from King René's Tournament Book.

The Duchy of Brittany, a medieval feudal state, existed from approximately 939 to 1547, encompassing the northwestern peninsula of Europe. It was bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the English Channel to the north, the Loire River to the south, and French provinces including Normandy to the east. Established following the Viking armies' expulsion around 939, the Duchy saw Henry II of England invade and become Count of Nantes in the mid-12th century. The Angevin control persisted until their northern French empire collapsed in 1204, after which the French Crown continued to exert influence throughout the 13th century. Supported by the Breton aristocracy, monastic orders spread throughout the Duchy in the 11th and 12th centuries, and the 13th century saw the establishment of the first mendicant orders in Brittany's major towns. The 14th century was marked by civil war during the Breton War of Succession, with rival claimants backed by England and France.
