Arnol Blackhouse Guidebook
For generations in rural Scotland, many lived in ‘blackhouses’, which were long thatched constructions where man and beast lived together under the same roof.
As the 1900s began to see improved standards of living, legislation was introduced that required humans and animals to be housed separately.
Arnol’s Blackhouse was entrusted to state care in the 1960’s. It has since been lovingly restored, giving visitors a clear insight into the day-to-day aspects of this bygone age.
This guide features evocative photography and lively descriptions, capturing the heavy atmosphere of the blackhouse.
