It was believed that only virgins could see the unicorn due to its rarity and elusiveness. Notably, the animal's horn was thought to possess the incredible ability to neutralise poison. Wine tainted with poison could be safely consumed from a unicorn's horn, and knife handles made from the substance would exude liquid if they came into contact with poisoned food. Naturally, such a coveted item would command a high price and was highly sought after by rulers and noblemen seeking protection from the frequent poisoning that occurred in the Middle Ages. Unicorns were also widely recognised as a symbol of purity and unrequited love.
