The Lady of Shallot Wall Tapestry

The Lady of Shallot Wall Tapestry is inspired by an original painting by John William Waterhouse who was an English Pre-Raphaelite painter most famous for his paintings of female characters from Greek Arthurian mythology. Illustrating Lord Alfred Tennyson's 1883 poem, 'Lady of Shalott', Waterhouse's painting eloquently captures the Lady's wistful, doomed quality as she embarks on her final voyage to Camelot.

'She leaves her tower, finds a boat upon which she writes her name, floats down the river to Camelot. She dies before arriving at the palace and among the knights & ladies who see her, is Lancelot and he thinks she is beautiful. "Who is this? And what is here?"
