Orkney Venus Decoration
Referred to as both the 'Orkney Venus' and 'Westray Wifie', the Orkney Venus Decoration portrays the iconic Neolithic figurine which was uncovered during a Historic Scotland dig at the Links of Noltland in 2009. Measuring just 4cm in height the original figurine is crafted from stone, it features a rounded head with eye holes, a brow line, and markings that represent a nose and mouth. Its elongated torso is reminiscent of the exaggerated form of a woman, characterized by wide hips.
This figurine is not only the earliest depiction of a human figure in Scotland, but also the earliest representation of a human face in the United Kingdom. On loan from the Crown, it is currently exhibited at the Westray Heritage Centre.
