Heraldry originated in the early 12th Century as a response to the challenge of identifying knights clad in full battle armour. To distinguish themselves, knights began displaying unique symbols on their shields and surcoats. This practice gave rise to the term "coat of arms," referring specifically to the designs worn on surcoats.
