The famous 'Black' Douglas dynasty owned Threave Castle and guarded it fiercely. Read more about the castle's history in this 28-page souvenir guide.
Threave Castle stands on an island in the River Dee. The island's history is said to span back to the 6th century. Medieval lords used the castle as protection and a base of operations and it became a strong fortress, attacked by King James II. The castle itself survived, the occupants only falling when the garrison was bribed.
