Tantallon Castle Guidebook
The Official Tantallon Castle Guidebook is perfect for planning a trip or learning more about this historic site.
The ruins of Tantallon Castle spectacularly situated on a promontory above the Forth Estuary, were once home to one of Scotland's mightiest families - the 'Red' Douglases, earls of Angus. It was from Tantallon that they strengthened their position over their rivals, the 'Black' Douglases; from here too that they defied king James IV and V. For 300 years the castle was the scene of banquets and sieges, until Oliver Cromwell's guns finally ended its days as both a fortress and residence in 1651.
