Crossraguel Abbey was founded in 1250, as a sister to Paisley Abbey. Construction was funded by a generous donation to the church by the Earl of Carrick.
The abbey has had an eventful history. Edward I's men attacked it in 1307, but it remained a fully functional abbey until the Scottish Reformation in 1560. Even then, the monks were permitted to remain until the last of them passed away in 1601.
This informative guide paints a colourful picture of the Abbey's history.
