Alpaca Fair Isle scarf
This large, knitted scarf features a Fair Isle design with a twist - look out for the alpacas in the design.
Knitted with a durable blend of alpaca & lambswool in a chunky 6 ply, this soft alpaca scarf is gently felted for a snag-proof finish and is super warm for the colder season.
It's also reversible - a perfect fair isle pattern on both sides.
The alpaca wool (or hair as it is correctly called) used in these products is of a very high quality and is manufactured by leading producers of alpaca yarn in Peru. They obtain the fibre from shearing the alpaca in much the same way as sheep shearing. No alpaca is harmed during the process.
The Alpaca fur used in Samantha Holmes’ products is also ethically sourced. The Alpacas from which the skins are removed are not killed for their fur.
There is a tradition in Peru which has developed as a result of the death of weaker and very young Alpaca in the harsh Andean Winters. Alpaca roam freely in their natural terrain on the Altiplano of the Andes where temperatures can plummet in the Winter. The fur Samantha Holmes sources is from younger alpaca which have died of natural causes, effectively herd wastage.
The farmers do not kill their baby alpacas for their skins because it is not financially viable for them to do so. Alpacas can live for 20 years, promising a lifetime of shearing potential of far greater value than a single pelt.
- 40% Alpaca, 25% Lambswool, 35% Acrylic
- A cool handwash (30º) with a mild detergent such as baby shampoo is recommended. Wash for no more than 5 minutes. Rinse in lukewarm water, always pressing, not wringing the fabric. Wrap the item in a clean dry towel to absorb excess moisture. Reshape as necessary and lay flat to dry. Do not hang your wet alpaca garment as it will stretch.
- When storing your alpaca product, fold or roll, rather than hang to prevent stretching.
