Exclusively published for Historic Scotland, The Blackhouses of Arnol covers some of the best preserved blackhouses on the Scottish island of Lewis.
A Scottish Blackhouse is a traditionally built dwelling from the mid-19th century, typically housing both people and livestock. The name may have come from the fact that blackhouses have no chimney; therefore the smoke would drift upward, covering the inside of the thatch roofs with soot.
This book is filled with detailed diagrams, colour photos and in-depth insight of how it was to live in one of these Hebridean homes.
